We’ve preached repeatedly that sticking to a consistent skincare routine and doing a little bit every day delivers the best results now while also protecting and nourishing your skin for years to come. Thankfully, we don’t have to convince too many people to do it, but one question we get asked a lot is, “what is the best age to start?”
It’s a fair question. After all, there is a sea of options these days for top-of-the-line professional skincare products and even over-the-counter options. And each has its own unique ingredients and twist on delivering results.
So what’s the ideal age for starting a skincare routine?
When it comes to having a consistent skincare routine, start as early as possible. With that said, younger people should start simple before ramping up to stronger, anti-aging products as time goes by. Here’s what we mean:
- Age 12 — Our rule of thumb is to wait to start a consistent skincare routine until at least the age of 12. Gentle cleansers, moisturizers, and plenty of sunscreen are more than enough at this age.
- Ages 13-19 — During puberty, most people develop oily skin and suffer from chronic acne. As a result, consider upgrading to an oil-control cleanser and spot treatments with salicylic acid moving forward. Moisturizers are still important here to keep the skin as smooth and nourished as possible.
- Ages 20-30 — This is where you can incorporate anti-aging products to ensure you don’t get hit hard by fine lines and wrinkles, sun spots, etc. Doing this in your 20s delays the onset of more visible signs of aging.
- Age 30 and above — Start adding retinol and retinoid products into your skincare routine and consult with a specialist at Live Young Wellness Spa to see if you need to change products as your skin matures.
Benefits to starting a consistent skincare routine
Believe it or not, we shed millions of skin cells every day to make room for newer skin. Maintaining a consistent skincare routine helps with this daily process, taking your skin from dull and tired to radiant and glowing. On top of that, prevention is easier than having to fix skin conditions that can be difficult to treat as we age.
Show your skin some love every day, and the results will be more than you could have ever imagined.
Here are a few skincare essentials to help get you started:
- Cleanser — Not only does cleansing with an actual skin cleanser and not just soap and water effectively remove dirt and makeup, but it clears pores so that you don’t get breakouts, allows moisturizers to do their job, and ensures that you always have healthy shining skin. Use a cleanser once a day at night.
- Exfoliation — Exfoliation partners with a cleanser to scrub away dead skin cells that clog pores. Unlike a cleanser, only exfoliate once or twice a week to avoid damaging your skin.
- Moisturizers — Using moisturizers is a non-negotiable in any skincare routine. Moisturizers keep your skin from drying out and enrich you with nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, Vitamin E, and more. Massage into your skin to seal in the moisture.
- Sunscreen — A quality sunscreen product has a Sun Protection Factor of at least 15, but most doctors recommend that you always wear sunscreen that is at least SPF 30. Make sure to use sunscreen year-round.
All we are saying here is that skincare is important at any age. Furthermore, you can’t do just one skincare treatment and expect to have amazing skin and look a decade younger overnight. It simply doesn’t work that way. What you need is a consistent skincare routine, one that will give you the results you want and last for years to come.
