During the colder months, most of us experience the same problem: our skin becomes drier and flakey. Skin can become very dry during the wintertime which can lead to cracked, bleeding, or itchy skin. In order to avoid dry skin, you will need to take a few extra measures to care for your skin during the wintertime. Here at Live Young Wellness Spa, we want to help you and your skin during these upcoming cold months. Nobody likes having dry itchy skin!
Yes, you still need SPF
You’d be surprised by how many people don’t wear sunscreen during the wintertime. Even if it’s not sunny or hot outside doesn’t mean you don’t need sunscreen-sunny days still exist and the sun can still be harmful to your skin. SPF is a great way to lock in moisture and protect your skin, and if you didn’t already know by now, it can also help by slowing down the aging process. Never skip this step as sunscreen is an all-year-round thing you must always wear.
Prep your living space
The drier the air, the direr the skin. We recommend placing a humidifier in the room where you spend most of your time (the bedroom is perfect). A cool air humidifier increases the moisture level in the air that has been sucked out by the dry indoor heat. This can help the skin’s barrier stay hydrated.
You already know, MOISTURIZE
You can purchase oils, ointments, creams, and lotions from your local drugstore. We recommend oil-based moisturizers or ointments since they offer the most protection in the winter. A good tip to remember is to always moisturize after your shower/bath so that you can lock in as much moisture as possible. For very dry skin, it is best to moisturize morning and night.
Avoiding hot showers
Although it might seem nice to take a nice long hot shower especially when it’s cold out, higher temperatures dry our skin by stripping away your skin’s surface oils. Try to limit showers to 10 minutes or less and try to use lukewarm water rather than hot water. A good trick to get your body used to cooler water is to slowly turn down the temperature as you shower.
Water is your best friend
Yes, it’s always a good idea to stay hydrated even during the winter. Your body tends to lose water through the skin when you spend most of your day in a warm indoor environment. During the winter your skin is looking for moisture in every possible way it can get it. Your body and skin will thank you for staying hydrated.
Time to swap the soap
Harsh soaps are one of the most common causes of dry skin. Soap is an emulsifier- it strips away the moisture within your skin. You want to avoid deodorant or perfumed soaps or soaps that contain alcohol. We recommend trying soap-free cleansing products like Cetaphil or Aquanil that contain added moisturizer.
