Life is about smiling, laughing, raising your eyebrows with excitement, and even letting loose the occasional frown. The problem is that these and so many more common facial expressions are bound to produce wrinkles and fine lines. Botox has long been the answer to erasing wrinkles that have set in over time and help you regain that youthful appearance, but what about preventative Botox? Is that even a thing — stopping wrinkles before they happen?
Yes. Preventative Botox is a thing, and it might be worth incorporating into your anti-aging skincare routine.
Prevention vs. Maintenance
While it may sound silly to try and erase something that isn’t there to erase, there is no denying the advantages of prevention vs. maintenance in your skincare routine. Fine lines that are allowed to set in over time, such as frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet, will become wrinkles at some point. Botox can stop these expression lines from becoming permanent wrinkles. While Botox later on in life is still highly effective, it’s still a more difficult process to minimize certain expression lines. So why not head them all off at the pass?
- Proactively treat wrinkles before they set in
- Train your facial muscles against negative movements that cause wrinkles
- No surgery
- Safe and effective procedure
- Results are immediate
When is the right time to do Preventative Botox?
Wrinkles are caused by repeated muscle contraction. Each injection of preventative Botox blocks signals from your body’s nerves, so when the muscle can’t contract, you don’t get wrinkles. The best part is that even when the product wears off, preventative Botox still prevents wrinkles from forming and teaches your face to avoid such movements in the future. That may sound unnatural, but when done right, it is completely normal.
You may be thinking, “OK, great. But when is the best time to start?” Consider it when your wrinkles begin to bother you. Some people might not develop wrinkles until their late 20s or even older, and how pronounced these wrinkles are depends on many factors: skin type, facial structure, genetics, and even how sun damage has impacted your skin.
There is no rule about when to start Preventative Botox, just like there is no rule about when to start maintenance later in life. So it’s best to do what makes sense for you in consultation with a trained professional.
As always, make sure you choose an expert for your Botox injections
One way to know if your Botox injector is credible is if they are a board-certified plastic surgeon or a Nurse Practitioner. Ask this question because, in the med spa world, any physician (regardless of specialty) can step in as a med spa medical director. We don’t know about you, but while we may rely on them to treat elevated blood pressure, mend a broken arm, or save a life, they aren’t the first people we’d ask to inject Botox.
Plastic surgeons and NP-Cs are required to stay up to date on all the latest treatments and procedures, understand the anatomy of both surgery and the aging process, identify risk factors, and have the right team around them.
At Live Young Wellness Spa, we have a plastic surgeon, Dr. Drew Sanderson. We also have our NP-C, Ashley. The staff meets every other week to discuss ways to improve, and we also hold weekly meetings for continuing education.
