There is a common misconception that cosmetic surgery is more popular for women than men. However, plastic surgery has become more normalized for men in recent years. At Flower Mound Plastic Surgery, we believe it’s important for everyone to feel good in their skin. Cosmetic procedures can boost confidence and self-esteem for men just as it does for women, but we don’t talk about men’s appearance-based goals as often as women’s. When people think about cosmetics, they usually associate it with women. However, our society has shifted away from the old stigma around men and plastic surgery, and now men are starting to explore cosmetic surgery options. Let’s review several cosmetic procedures that Dr. Sanderson commonly performs on men.
Upper & Lower Blepharoplasty
Upper and lower blepharoplasty are both surgical procedures that address concerns with the eyes. As men age, it’s common to experience wrinkles, bags, and excess skin around the eyes that become irritating. An upper blepharoplasty will remove the excess skin on the eyelids, so your eyelids no longer appear heavy. The natural human eye contains a few excess fat deposits that have no purpose, which are surgically removed. Dr. Sanderson surgically removes these, so you have smoother eyelid skin. Dealing with excess skin on the upper eyelids or having a tired appearance will no longer be an insecurity after this procedure! Lower blepharoplasty is a similar procedure except it targets the lower eyelids. A candidate for lower blepharoplasty would be someone who has puffiness, fat bulges, or dark circles around their lower eyelids. Also, the lower and upper blepharoplasty can be paired together for people who have concerns with both their upper and lower eyelids. For someone receiving an upper and lower blepharoplasty, it’s called a “quad blepharoplasty”.
Gynecomastia
Men may choose to undergo gynecomastia surgery because they struggle to wear tighter-fitting shirts without feeling self-conscious about the appearance of their chest. Individuals considering this procedure may be uncomfortable or hold insecurities due to their larger chest size. This surgery can improve comfort and confidence, so you can wear that shirt you love again. A gynecomastia procedure consists of removing excess tissue and fat from the chest to create a flatter and more masculine contour of the chest. This procedure is also known as a male breast reduction for those who aren’t familiar with the medical name. If you feel like gynecomastia might be right for you, it’s highly recommended that you book a consultation with Dr. Sanderson.
Liposuction
Losing fat in specific areas of your body can be tough and sometimes it doesn’t matter whether you are active or not, your fat may just be stubborn. Liposuction can be a great option for men ready to get rid of excess fat stored in certain areas. If a man is prone to storing fat in a designated part of their body, liposuction could assist in removing it. Liposuction includes a cannula being inserted underneath the skin to separate the fat, then suction is attached to the cannula, which removes fat from the body. Men commonly receive liposuction in the abdomen, flanks, neck, back, and chest. Liposuction can be paired with other cosmetic surgeries as well, so you can address your concerns and formulate a plan with Dr. Sanderson during your pre-op appointment.
Rhinoplasty
You may be dissatisfied with the appearance of your natural nose, and a new shape to your nose could boost your self-esteem making you happier in the long run. A rhinoplasty is often done on people who dislike the natural shape, size, or proportions of their nose. Sometimes a slight correction of a specific nose part can improve your appearance. Men may desire a more masculine nose, and a rhinoplasty could help them achieve their desired appearance. Typically, men want their nose to appear strong, and straight, with a higher bridge and slightly larger nostrils than a woman’s. A rhinoplasty will involve the reconstruction and reshaping of the bone and cartilage to elevate the overall appearance of your nose.
Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck)
At Flower Mound Plastic Surgery, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is one of our most popular procedures for men and women. A tummy tuck includes the removal of excess fat and skin from the abdomen and the tightening of the underlying muscles. Many people will want a tummy tuck after significant weight loss because they want the excess skin removed. Overweight men who lose an immense amount of weight may notice their skin become loose or saggy. A tummy tuck can repair this by removing excess skin and fat, which tightens the abdomen. Men are often drawn to this surgery to eliminate excess skin or fat or to receive body contouring. Many of our patients who receive a tummy tuck will get contouring liposuction additionally.
