Filler in the Lips. Voluptuous, pouty lips have been considered attractive for centuries. In ancient Egypt, various dyes and substances were used to paint the lips in order to make them look larger and more attractive. Even in the U.S., in 1900, there were documented surgical efforts to make the lips larger. However, in our current world of social media, where selfies are mandatory, it is no surprise people are seeking lip augmentation more than ever.
Nowhere in the world of aesthetics has one area done more to turn the average person away, more than filler in the lips. Because over-filled, fake lips are commonplace, the average person considering lip augmentation does so with some trepidation. In fact, poorly or over-injected lips occur so often the adjective “duck-lipped” has found its way into our American slang. There is really no excuse for the over-injected look. It is absolutely possible to add some nice looking, subtle volume to your kissers without every person in the room wondering what you did to your lips.
How do we add beautiful volume without over-doing it?
First of all, it comes down to injector experience. The larger the lips are to start with, the more we can add without creating freakishly over-done lips. We typically start with Juvederm Vollure or Juvederm Volbella, which lasts 18 months to one year, respectively. You will definitely swell and possibly bruise, so if you go out in public the day after your injections, expect to draw some attention. However, swelling goes away pretty quickly over the next few days.
What if I have a very fine, thin lips?
We can still add volume. We just have to do so a little more slowly. The way skin (and lips) responds to tension is by undergoing mitosis or adding more skin. The tension created by the first injection will cause some slight tension and your red lip to undergo mitosis creating more red lip. If we try to fill too much too fast, then the lips will tighten and look unnatural. However, if your patient, we can build lips over time.
Is getting filler in the lips painful?
The short answer is no. We can make it nearly painless in one of two ways: 1). we can use numbing cream and as long as we allow 15-20 minutes for it to take effect, pain should be pretty minimal, or… 2). we can do lidocaine nerve blocks in your upper and lower lips so you won’t feel anything during the actual filler injections.
How much does it cost?
We usually start with one syringe (one milliliter) and for Vollure (lasts up to 18 months) it is between $650 to $750, depending on who injects it and whether or not you are in our Live Young Wellness Spa Prime Membership Program.
