Bikini season is upon us, so prep accordingly and make your life more convenient by receiving several sessions of laser hair removal before summer hits. Spring is the ideal time to get laser hair removal because you are still able to avoid sun exposure before your treatments. Once tanning season begins, you must be strategic about planning your laser hair removal sessions and limit your UV exposure prior. At Live Young Wellness Spa, it is important to us that you come properly prepared before your treatment to receive optimal results. Our goal is to advise you on the protocol to follow before your treatment and specific aspects to avoid as well. Let’s discuss the significance of shaving and cleaning the area prior to your treatment, and avoiding plucking, waxing, tanning, medicated creams, lotions, and deodorant as well.
Don’t Pluck or Wax
It is easy to form the habit of plucking and waxing your hair, but when you begin your laser hair removal journey, we encourage you to stop. Although plucking and waxing your hair can be satisfying it can cause a less effective laser hair removal treatment. Since laser hair removal targets the pigment of the hair you do not want to remove the hair follicle prior to getting treated because the treatment will not work. If you recently plucked or waxed your hair but want to start laser hair removal you should wait about three weeks until receiving treatment to ensure the best results.
Shave the Area
It’s always wise to plan ahead for your laser hair removal appointment so you can avoid any complications the day of your treatment. An imperative step in the laser hair removal prep process is shaving the area that will be treated the day before. It’s important to shave before laser hair removal so the area is clean for accurate targeting. Also, shaving will make the treatment more comfortable for you. When you leave your hair longer the treatment can be uncomfortable and potentially cause burns or skin irritation because more heat is absorbed from the laser. We want to make sure you understand that receiving laser hair removal is only effective when you come fully prepped and ready to go!
Avoid Tanning
We all enjoy soaking up the sun and getting a nice tan, but when you are planning to get laser hair removal it is vital to avoid sun exposure two to four weeks prior to your appointment. Of course, the longer you go without tanning, the better. Our laser experts suggest the ideal time to get a laser hair removal treatment is when your skin tone is its natural color. Doing laser hair removal on tan skin could result in a less effective treatment. Since tanning causes a rise in melanin and the laser is attracted to melanin, the laser will struggle to recognize the difference between hair and skin. When the laser is unable to detect your hair from your skin the treatment cannot provide you with optimal results.
Arrive with Clean Skin
Before arriving to your laser hair removal appointment, please cleanse your skin thoroughly. This is a crucial step to remember prior to treating your desired areas because clean skin eliminates the possibility of interference from dirt, oils, lotions, deodorant, or makeup. When your skin has not been cleansed prior to your appointment the laser can be deflected causing ineffective treatment. We advise doing a deep cleanse at home before arrival, so you get the most out of your treatment.
Stop Using Medicated Creams
Many people utilize topical medicated creams on their skin, however; we ask you stop application of any medicated creams at least three days before your treatment. Many medicated creams create photosensitivity, making your skin too sensitive for laser treatment. At Live Young Wellness Spa, we recommend asking one of our providers if you are uncertain about any of the medicated creams you are using and if you need to stop using it prior to your treatment.
