Honoring Pioneers During Women’s History Month & International Women’s Day
Every March, Women’s History Month gives us an opportunity to recognize the women who have shaped industries, challenged expectations, and created new opportunities for future generations. With International Women’s Day on March 8, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the innovators who helped build the beauty and aesthetic industries we know today.
From early skincare pioneers to leaders in aesthetic medicine, these women transformed how we approach beauty, skincare, and self-confidence. Their work laid the foundation for many of the treatments, products, and opportunities available in the industry today.
Below are just a few of the remarkable women whose influence continues to inspire the world of beauty and aesthetics.
Madam C. J. Walker
Beauty & Entrepreneurship Pioneer (Early 1900s)
Madam C. J. Walker is often recognized as America’s first self-made female millionaire. In the early 1900s, she built a thriving beauty empire through the Madam C. J. Walker Manufacturing Company, creating haircare products specifically designed for Black women at a time when few companies served this community. Beyond developing innovative products, Walker created opportunities for thousands of women by training them to become sales agents and entrepreneurs. Her work helped establish beauty not just as a product industry but as a pathway for women’s economic empowerment and independence. Her legacy remains a powerful example of how beauty, business, and community can intersect to create lasting impact.
Helena Rubinstein
Skincare Industry Pioneer (1900s–1950s)
Long before “personalized skincare” became a modern trend, Helena Rubinstein was already introducing the concept to the world. As the founder of the luxury skincare brand Helena Rubinstein, she helped transform beauty by promoting skincare routines tailored to different skin types. At a time when beauty was often treated as purely cosmetic, Rubinstein emphasized the importance of skincare science, treatments, and consistent routines. Her philosophy, “Beauty is power,” reflected her belief that confidence and self-care could positively impact women’s lives. Her influence helped shape the skincare industry and the professional beauty services that followed.
Estée Lauder
Modern Beauty Marketing Pioneer (1940s–1990s)
Estée Lauder helped revolutionize the modern beauty industry through both innovative products and groundbreaking marketing strategies. As the founder of Estée Lauder Companies in 1946, she built one of the most recognizable beauty brands in the world. One of her most famous innovations was the “gift-with-purchase,” a marketing concept that forever changed how beauty products were introduced and sold. Lauder also believed strongly that beauty should be accessible and empowering. Her well-known philosophy, “Every woman can be beautiful” continues to influence the beauty industry today.
Mary Kay Ash
Women’s Entrepreneurship Pioneer (1960s–2000s)
When Mary Kay Ash founded Mary Kay in 1963, her goal extended beyond creating a successful cosmetics company. She wanted to build a business model that supported and empowered women. Mary Kay became one of the most successful beauty brands founded by a woman and created a network that helped thousands of women build careers in the beauty industry. Her approach combined product innovation with mentorship, leadership development, and financial independence. Her influence helped demonstrate how the beauty industry could provide opportunities for women to succeed in business and leadership roles.
Dr. Jean Carruthers
Aesthetic Medicine Pioneer (1980s–Present)
A Canadian ophthalmologist, Dr. Carruthers, co-pioneered the cosmetic use of Botox after noticing that patients treated for eye muscle spasms also experienced a smoothing of facial wrinkles. Working with her husband, dermatologist Alastair Carruthers, she helped research and publish the first studies on Botox for cosmetic wrinkle reduction in the early 1990s. Today, wrinkle relaxers have become one of the most widely performed aesthetic treatments worldwide. Their work helped launch a new era of non-surgical aesthetic treatments and expanded the possibilities of modern aesthetic medicine.
