Breast implants are a popular choice for women looking to enhance or restore their breast appearance. However, like any medical device, they aren’t designed to last forever. Over time, implants may need to be replaced or removed, which brings us to a common question: How often should you get your breast implants exchanged?
At Flower Mound Plastic Surgery and Clearfork Plastic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Braswell, specialize in breast implant procedures, including implant exchanges. Whether you’re considering upgrading to a different type of implant or addressing concerns related to implant aging, we’re here to help guide you through the process.
When Do You Need an Implant Exchange?
Contrary to popular belief, breast implants do not have an expiration date. However, most patients will need to have their implants exchanged or removed at some point during their lifetime. The average lifespan of breast implants is around 10 to 15 years, though some women may need a replacement sooner depending on their specific circumstances. Factors that can impact the need for implant exchange include:
- Implant Rupture or Leakage: Over time, implants can rupture or leak, especially in the case of saline implants, where deflation becomes apparent quickly. Silicone implant ruptures may not be as obvious, but regular MRI or ultrasound checks are recommended to detect any issues.
- Capsular Contracture: A condition where scar tissue hardens around the implant, potentially causing discomfort or altering the shape of the breast. In these cases, an exchange or removal may be necessary.
- Changes in Breast Appearance: Aging, weight fluctuations, or pregnancy can all affect the appearance of the breasts over time. Some women opt for implant exchanges to adjust the size, shape, or position of their implants.
- Desire for a Different Size or Type: Some patients may choose to upgrade to newer models, change the size of their implants, or switch from saline to silicone (or vice versa) as preferences change.
How Often is Exchange Recommended?
At Flower Mound and Clearfork Plastic Surgery, we generally recommend that patients monitor their breast implants every 10 years. This does not necessarily mean you’ll need an implant exchange at the 10-year mark, but it’s a good time to assess your implants’ condition and overall breast health. Regular follow-up appointments are key, and we suggest coming in for yearly exams to ensure everything remains in good shape.
For patients with silicone implants, it’s recommended to get them exchanged after the 10-14 year mark depending on the individual, and then about every 18-20 years for saline.
What Happens During an Implant Exchange Procedure?
The implant exchange procedure is very similar to the initial breast augmentation surgery. Depending on your needs, your Dr. Sanderson or Dr. Braswell may use the same incision sites to minimize scarring. During the procedure, the old implants are removed, and new ones are placed in their position. The surgery may also involve additional steps, such as a breast lift, to address sagging or enhance breast shape.
