It seems like there is a med spa on every street corner. And considering the array of services they all offer, patients might find it difficult to notice even the most subtle of differences. Well, here is a big difference you need to be aware of: if you plan on visiting one soon, choose a med spa with a board-certified plastic surgeon as its medical director.
You might not think that matters much, but patients near and far are fooled almost daily into thinking they are getting the same quality of treatment when they are instead getting someone who has taken a crash course to be certified.
Board-certified plastic surgeon vs. medical director
Med spas in Texas do not have to be owned by a plastic surgeon. But if they arenβt, they are required by law to at least have a medical director who oversees the practice. The rub in the med spa world is that any physician, regardless of specialty (family practitioner, emergency room doctor, etc.), can step in as a medspa medical director. We donβt know about you, but while we may rely on them to treat elevated blood pressure, mend a broken arm, or save a life during a heart attack, they arenβt the first people weβd ask to inject filler, botox, or decide what laser treatments work best.
Furthermore, as we mentioned earlier, there are too many med spas in Texas for the Texas Medical Board to regulate them properly. You would hope every med spa has sound policies and procedures, but mistakes happen. Without proper oversight, a situation could arise where the medical director may never set foot in the facility. This becomes a massive problem if the med spa is owned by someone with no medical training or very little training.
Plastic surgeons, on the other hand, are board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
They are required to:
- Stay up to date on all the latest treatments and procedures
- Understand the anatomy of both surgery and the aging process
- Identify risk factors for each patient
- Have the right team around them at all times
At Live Young Wellness Spa in Flower Mound, we have a plastic surgeon, Dr. Drew Sanderson, on the premises nearly 100% of the time when the doors are open. If our team has a problem or concern, he can be reached immediately. The staff also meets every other week to discuss ways to improve and also hold weekly meetings for continuing education.
In these meetings, we may go over a new treatment or review a topic weβve gone over before to make sure we are on the same page. Compare those practices to a med spa with a medical director who only shows up to sign charts once every six months, and itβs easy to see the vast difference in the quality of care.
How to know if your med spa has a board-certified plastic surgeon as its medical director
When youβre shopping for the perfect med spa, be sure to ask all the right questions during your initial consultation. This includes asking the physician if he or she is board-certified in plastic surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. It is also perfectly acceptable to see their body of work β including before and after photos of previous patients β to get an idea of the kind of results you can expect.
