There’s nothing better than being able to enjoy long-lasting, smooth skin and not having to worry about shaving, waxing, or tweezing. Laser hair removal has continued to be one of the most popular treatments we offer at Live Young Wellness Spa because it’s fast, effective, and especially ideal for summer and vacation prep. However, if you’re a fan of golden tan skin year-round (hello, self-tanner), there’s one thing you absolutely need to know: laser hair removal and self-tanner don’t mix.
Here’s Why That Tan Needs to Fade First
Laser hair removal targets pigment — specifically, the melanin in your hair follicles. The laser energy seeks out this pigment, heats it up, and ultimately damages the follicle so it can’t produce new hair. When you apply self-tanner or spray tan, you’re artificially adding pigment to your skin’s surface. That confuses the laser, increases the risk of side effects, and makes the treatment less effective.
The Risks of Laser + Self-Tanner:
- Increased Risk of Burns or Blistering: The laser can mistake the pigment in your tanner for a hair follicle, potentially causing burns or hyperpigmentation.
- Uneven Results: Tanned skin may absorb more laser energy than it should, leading to inconsistent or patchy hair removal
- Higher Chance of Side Effects: Think dark spots, light spots, or irritation — none of which are worth it for a temporary glow.
How Long Should You Wait Before Getting Laser Hair Removal After Self Tanner?
We typically recommend waiting for at least 2 weeks after applying a self-tanner or spray tan before coming in for laser hair removal. We want to make sure the self-tanner is completely gone before your laser hair removal appointment to ensure you are getting the most effective treatment possible. It’s also important to exfoliate regularly in the days leading up to your appointment to help fade any residual pigment on the skin.
What About Natural Sun Tans?
The same rules apply. If you’ve recently spent time in the sun and have a tan, it’s best to wait until your skin returns to its natural tone. At Live Young Wellness Spa, we want you to come best prepared for your laser hair removal appointment so it’s best to consider these things beforehand!
Pro Tips for Laser Hair Removal Prep:
- Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanner for 2-4 weeks before treatment.
- Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment.
- Skip lotions, oils, and deodorant on the day of treatment.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment.
