Many of our patients who come in for consultations ask, “Why do I have smoker’s lines if I never smoked? “Why does my lipstick bleed up above my top lip?” “Why do I have a barcode on my lip?” These are just a few of the questions we receive when patients are worried about their lip lines from every age. Lip lines are one of the first things that we notice when we take a glance at our lipstick in the mirror or just our appearance in general. Unfortunately, lip lines can make us appear older than our actual age.
What Causes Lip Lines?
Many factors cause those pesky little lines above your lips. At some point in time, everyone develops lip lines. As we age, we naturally start to lose collagen and elastin, which causes our skin to lose elasticity and to thin. The issue with losing elasticity is that when our lip muscles are being used (think puckering) the skin wants to stay contracted and does not want to smooth out once released. Lip lines can be caused by genetics, not enough sleep, and sun damage. Other causes can include habits such as repetitive use of straws, smoking, and constant lip puckering.
How Can I Prevent or Treat Lip Lines?
Aging can be a tough process for anyone. We feel younger than the person we see in the mirror. The absolute best way we can go through the aging process is to take preventive measures and maintain a good skin care regimen, luckily you have Live Young Wellness Spa that can help with all of your concerns!
SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN!
We cannot stress SPF enough! UV radiation breaks down collagen. Wearing SPF can make a huge difference in your appearance in the long run. Even on cloudy days, always wear it!
Medical Grade Skincare
Using medical grade skincare is the best kind of skincare to use! They contain many anti-aging ingredients and can repair the skin over time if you already have those fine lines. Our favorite product that can help with skin elasticity and collagen is the Alastin Restorative Skin Complex!
Staying Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water keeps your body hydrated and refreshed and also helps maintain your skin’s elasticity. We also recommend keeping your lips hydrated as well.
Botulinum Toxin
Botox/Dysport/DAXXIFY can be used to treat both upper and upper lip lines effectively.
Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers can be used for volume loss and to fill lines if needed.
Microneedling & Laser Resurfacing
Microneedling and laser resurfacing stimulate collagen and elastin. Laser resurfacing can remove fine lines or wrinkles around the eyes, cheeks, or mouth.
Chemical Peels
Improve the tone, texture, and clarity of your skin with the VI Chemical Peel! This formula contains a blend of powerful ingredients that are suitable for all skin types. It softens fine lines and wrinkles and restores a more even skin tone by reducing age spots and sun damage. The VI Peel also improves texture by smoothing away rough skin to reveal a more youthful, glowing complexion.
Reducing Repetitive Movements
Try to refrain from using straws and smoking. Moving your lips during these activities can cause lip lines.
Regardless of age, Live Young Wellness Spa can help you with those unwanted lip lines! Come in for a consultation to see how we can help with all of your desired skin concerns/goals!
